The running shoe market isn’t always easy to figure out. It’s not uncommon to find $250 runners who promise faster times and, to their credit, do so. But for the average runner, that’s a lot of sports shoes. There are a lot of cheap options, and I’ve spent more than 20 years trying to figure out what makes a “cheap” running shoe. During those 20 years and more, I’ve tried almost every kind of running shoe for every kind of run. You name it: marathons, weekend trail runs, sprints around the block, etc. Together with the author of “Kicksology,” Brian Metzler, and the owner of a Fleet Feet franchise, Mike Fronsoe, we’ve run thousands of miles to figure out which pairs will save you the most money. Here are some of our favorites from brands like Hoka, Brooks, and New Balance. At the end of this guide, I’ve also included tips on how to find cheap sports shoes and details about how I tested everything. Plus, you can also check the Reebok Coupon Code.
Adidas Adizero RC 3
The Adizero RC 3 is a sleek, simple sports shoe that screams speed from heel to toe. Look at the Hi-Res Yellow colorway, for example. From Gen 2 to Gen 3, Adidas hasn’t made many big changes, and you might not even notice a difference besides a new mesh pattern. The drop height of the new Adizero RC 3 was lowered by 0.5 mm, but you probably won’t notice the difference. It has the same Lightstrike cushioning as the RC 2, and at 7.4 ounces, it weighs almost nothing. The outsole is made of Adiwear, which should keep you going smoothly during 5K races.
If you’ve been around Believe in the Run for a while, you’ve probably heard of Atreyu. The small company only has two models: the Base Model for training and the Artist for racing. Both are more than affordable, but the Base Model is the best deal. The subscription is no longer available, but for $85, it will be hard to find another pair of sports shoes of any kind. Thomas and Dave got to drive the first Base Model, and they fell in love with the KISS method. The sports shoe doesn’t try to be something it isn’t, and it almost doesn’t weigh anything. The design is sleek and comes in a lot of different colors, and Atreyu has been known to make one or two special editions in the past.
Brooks Start 9
After a not-very-good Launch, the Brooks Launch 8 got us back into the series. Now, its replacement is ready to take a step forward. All of our reviewers agree that the Brooks Launch 9 fits well and can easily last for hundreds of miles. All four people who looked at the sports shoe found problems with it. Some, like those who didn’t like the BioMoGo DNA midsole, just couldn’t get behind it.
But when you can’t spend much, there are bound to be some problems. The good news is that everyone says the new upper is a joy. It’s light and airy, and with Summer GRIT coming up, it should work out great. Even better, the Hyperion Elite 3 has a Blue Surf colorway that goes well with it.
Brooks Revel 5
We all believe that the book of Revelation is true, and that’s not going to change any time soon. The fifth-generation sports shoe has a knit upper and a fun BioMoGo DNA midsole, but the price is still low. Robbe and Stef (before she joined Hoka) both liked running in the shoe, and it was hard to criticize something so cheap. The Revel 5 may not be your favorite for top-end speed because it tends to get squishy when going fast, but it’s a smooth ride. It’s a great everyday choice because it can handle most distances with ease. Due to the flat platform, you might want to be careful when digging over longer distances. In all honesty, I think this is the most underrated Brooks shoe. The Revel 6 might be coming soon, so buy the 5 for even less money now.
